OBTAINING THE ESTA

French nationals and nationals of the following Visa Waiver Program countries are required to obtain an ESTA authorization to travel to the United States without a visa (maximum stay of 90 days for business or tourism):

Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Monaco, New Zealand, Portugal, Republic of Malta, San Marino, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, United States of America .

French citizens with an ordinary passport no longer need a visa, whether business, tourism or transit, provided that:

  • Have a round-trip airfare (or continuity if transit)
  • Present a biometric or electronic passport with a validity of six months beyond the envisaged stay. Failing this, obtaining a visa will be compulsory.
  • The passport must be issued by one of the beneficiary countries of the Visa Waiver Program and must be valid 6 months after the return date (valid only for certain nationalities).
  • All passengers must be in possession of their own passport including children and babies.
  • Provide proof of credit worthiness (credit cards, traveler's checks)
  • Require ESTA, at least 72 hours before departure. Authorization valid for 2 years from the date of issue or until expiry of the passport. VSI can do this
  • Maximum stay of 90 days
  • Not having visited Iran, Iraq, Syria and Yemen since 2013

French non-biometric emergency passports are not valid for travel to the United States without a visa, even if the ESTA has been accepted.

  • ESTA applications may be submitted at any time prior to travel; It is recommended to do so at least 72 hours before departure.
  • In most cases, an almost immediate response is provided by the electronic travel authorization system:

- Authorization granted: Travel is authorized.

- Unauthorized travel: The traveler must apply for a temporary visa to the consular services of an American embassy before traveling to the United States.

- Pending authorization: The traveler can check the progress of his file on the "ESTA" website. A final response will be available within 72 hours.

WARNING

Travelers with dual nationality or who have visited after March 2011 Iran, Iraq, Syria or Sudan will no longer be able to benefit from the ESTA Visa Waiver Program to travel to the United States without a visa.

Since 21 January 2016, the United States has added restrictions to the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) program for the purpose of countering terrorism. Thus, persons with dual Iraqi , Syrian or Sudanese nationality , or who have visited these three countries in the last five years, can no longer benefit from the visa exemption: they must apply for a visa through embassies, consulates or other Diplomatic representations.

The only exception to these new restrictions is that the soldiers of the allied countries who have fought alongside US troops in Iraq will be exempt from visas. Humanitarian workers and journalists could also be exempted "on a case-by-case basis".

As from 1 April 2016, it will also be compulsory for all ESTA-administered travelers to use an electronic (biometric) passport to travel to the United States.
